🥕 Work Like An Athlete… 🏅

I moved to United States in 1996. Back in Belarus, I played lots of soccer.

I am super competitive when it comes to sports and would get upset when my friends didn’t want to play.

When I came to the States, I quickly realized that everyone was obsessed with basketball where I lived. All the cool kids were playing it and no one cared about soccer.

So what does a 13 year old do? I told myself I needed to get super good at basketball to impress my friends and girls, of course. I was very good at soccer but I wanted to be even better at basketball.

When I played with some classmates, I was absolutely horrible. They were laughing at my dribbling, my weird shooting, and so on.

So I decided to get serious about it. On most evenings after school, I’d be at the park next to our home dribbling and shooting. My dad bought my a hoop for the driveway and I spent HOURS every day, all summer going ham.

None of my classmates or friends knew I was doing that. They still believed I sucked at it. But man was I getting better and better.

I’m sure I annoyed a lot of my neighbors with the basketball bouncing all day… But I was hungry. The motivation of showing them how good I can be was HUGE.

I’m sure you already know where this story is heading. I got DAMN good. So good that I was the captain of the high school team, was invited to play in rec leagues and truly considered myself the best in my county.

Everyone that came across me thought I was super talented, born to play the game. But none of them saw the hours upon hours in my driveway and nearby parks, working on my game.

I took that mindset to business as well. The work that no-one sees is what counts. That’s what moves you to be that superstar everyone envies.

Work like an athlete…

I can’t count on my fingers how many times people have counted me out as far as an athlete growing up, thinking I’m just some white guy with a basketball in my hands.

But work beats talent any day.
